Training to get accurate information
The TEF (Section A) tests your ability to obtain precise information on a given subject. The French used is the same whatever the type of exam, and it’s the same in La Vie.
For example, for the TEF Section A, you have to simulate a telephone call to obtain information about an advertisement you’ve just been given. The conversation is formal, with opening and closing greetings. You need to obtain precise information about the activity: times, costs, location, etc., and anything else you need to organize yourself (making an appointment, placing an order, making a reservation, etc.).
Conversation should be natural and effective, just like in La Vie.
This is the work required during the TEF Section Abut it’s also a very useful skill for the TCF (Tache 2) and during the examOQLF (Partie 2)to obtain information or clarification.

This is also why this course does not cover the more complex vocabulary of level C1. However, you can add more complex vocabulary and phrases if you wish to progress to C1.

A solid B2 is a necessary step to then succeed at Level C1.
In fact, if we analyze the levels in a simple way, we could characterize them as follows:
_ B1: We have some knowledge of French but don’t really know how to use it. We can communicate in simple terms.
_ B2: You know how to use your knowledge. You are comfortable and confident enough to communicate. You have a larger vocabulary, you have learned to express different communication intentions, you know how to obtain specific information, and you are beginning to argue. In addition, with mastery of routine vocabulary (such as that used in everyday life or professional life), you will move up a level and become effective and comfortable.
_ C1: At this level, you can communicate in a more nuanced way in more complex conversations. You use more turns of phrase and your vocabulary is richer and more complex, with more complex tenses and carefully chosen connectors, etc. However, this more elaborate and complex communication at C1 level is based on the methodology and tools acquired at B2 level.
_ C1 builds on B2, which is why a poor command of B2 can be one of the factors that limits your progress and causes you to fail C1 several times, almost always with the same final score, even if you work hard… with lots of vocabulary and expressions.
The real goal of most of my students is the longer term. 😎
In fact, their primary goal is to pass the exam, but their secondary goal is to achieve a solid B2/B2+ level in order to have the autonomy necessary to better integrate French into their lives (personal/professional) and to continue improving after the exam (or, at a minimum, depending on their circumstances, to maintain the level they have achieved).
That is also why you will not find any literary vocabulary here, or any other vocabulary that is rarely used in real life.
For my students, it also means thinking about an immigration interview (sometimes an hour and months after the exam), a future job interview (often in English and French), a good job, a good salary, building a new life, and integrating well into their new environment.
Their goal is therefore also to have a useful and open French, which is essential beyond the exam … in order to succeed.

Training “validated” by dozens of examiners

This training program works well with all examiners because it is based on the Quebec French Proficiency Scale (Levels 1 to 12), which is linked to the European CEFR system (Levels A1 to C2). It is a universal scoring system that is applied to all exams and by all examiners. This level system is therefore used for the TEF – TEFAQ, the TCF – TCFQ, the OQLF, etc.
For example, for the TEF _ TEFAQ Oral Expression and Oral Comprehension, here is the level of French required by MIFI under the Quebec Experience Program : 
For the TEF _ TEFAQ Written Expression and Written Comprehension, the required level is level 5.
The main difference between the exams is the exam format and the assessment grid used by the examiners for each exam. This grid enables structured and standardized assessment (it is also useful for comparing assessments).
Furthermore, as with the TEF – TEFAQ, the score is overall, so make sure you understand the different assessment criteria because you can compensate for (or correct) weaknesses, earn points, or move up a level by using: rich vocabulary and idiomatic expressions, complex tenses and varied structures with good connectors, presenting high-quality arguments (well-developed and varied), …. fluent and natural conversation 
So be strategic by taking into account your current level, the preparation time you have available, and the goal you are aiming for.

Thanks to this preparation, you will save the cost of tutoring hours that would be necessary to acquire the methodology, tools, and knowledge explained here. However, before taking the exam, it is necessary to put your knowledge into practice through intensive simulations.
The usual solution is to work with a tutor or a school.
- Some students do simulations with other students or a tutor during their preparation and with a tutor at the end of their preparation (starting early is the best solution).
- Others prefer to do intensive simulations with a tutor after completing their training.
- Others prefer to take a school course with simulations at the end of this training.
- Others, who already know how to express themselves at the B2 level, immediately attempt the exam.
It is important to put yourself in an exam situation and evaluate your performance, and to do simulations with a French speaker who is familiar with the exam, who is able to identify your mistakes, help you correct them, and give you priorities. Another advantage for you is to see how you react in exam conditions 😎

You are not ready, you have a B1 or B1+/B2 level, your goal is B2, and you don’t have enough time to prepare.
Whatever your level, you need to be familiar with the format of the tests, as well as techniques and strategies to showcase your French during the exam. Sans ces connaissances, sans préparation et même si vous avez le niveau B2, vous pouvez échouer 😕
Here are some general tips… incomplete:
You have Level B1 and no time… => It will be hard, but fight!
- Your goal will be to optimize the use of your current knowledge to compensate for major weaknesses. You will have to make choices, limit your ambitions, but highlight the French you do know. To do this, use the assessment criteria table.
- Look at the answers and understand your goal. Understand the tests and their stages, and look at the exam techniques… Also, prepare yourself to turn difficult moments into opportunities 😎
- Don’t forget the importance of scenarios!
- Then make choices that suit your knowledge and personality.
For example, you could prioritize: exam questions, expressing causes and consequences clearly, reporting an opinion, giving advice, and having a fluid conversation. You could add synonyms and two or three idiomatic expressions, a little present subjunctive with opinion verbs (Croire, Penser) in the negative form…
Your goal is to speak coherently, clearly express causes and consequences, have a “fluid and natural conversation,” and showcase your French. In any case, fight for it because you have nothing to lose and everything to gain 😎
You have Level B1+/B2 and no time… => It’s doable if you’re strategic!
- Prioritize showcasing your French (with simple but well-structured ideas, good vocabulary, and appropriate tenses). Also consider the evaluation criteria.
- At the same time, if you don’t have much time, and although it’s difficult to give you good advice without knowing you:
For Part A and Part B:
_ Start by looking at some corrected papers and their analyses, identify your weaknesses, and set priorities, because it will be impossible to do everything.
_ Sections A and B: See also “Imagining a scenario.”
_ Sections A and B: See also How to have a “fluid and natural conversation.”
_ Section A: Learn how to ask questions about major topics (This is explained in this preparation course)
_ Section B: You need to understand your role at each stage of the exam (and the importance of Stage 0), know how to “respond to a counterargument,” develop your ideas, have several techniques for persuading (this is explained in this preparation), and know how to express causes and consequences.
_ Section B: understand the causes and consequences, advise, report on a testimony or experience, and develop/elaborate on your ideas.
_ Don’t forget to use a few complex tenses and … opinion verbs in the negative form.
_ Sections A and B: you must learn to showcase your French language skills.
_ Sections A and B: you must be prepared to turn any difficult moment into an opportunity 😉
_ Also spend time analyzing, point by point (according to the evaluation criteria), the mock exams (videos) that you can find online. Putting yourself in the examiner’s shoes is a way to look at your work differently.

Finally, go back to the answers and check whether you have understood “the exam game” correctly.

To really increase your chances: if you can afford it, immediately hire a tutor who is very familiar with the exam and who is able to work intensively, give you priorities, and help you by taking into account your level, personality, and the time available for preparation. If you decide to hire a tutor, start as soon as possible, depending on your budget, but don’t wait until the last minute!
Nothing will be perfect, but fight for your chance!

If you are studying on your own: B1 / B2 -> EXAM
Your goal is B2, you have time, and you want to prepare on your own.
Some suggestions (adapt to your level and situation):
_ Do all the preparation
_ Start with general presentation of the two tests.
Next, I recommend that you quickly review the other two courses (Section A Preparation and Section B Preparation), look at some answer keys to get an overview, and determine your goal.
Next, organize yourself step by step for each course.
_ Download the cheat sheets and take notes.
Take the time to think about and imagine how you can use (during exams and in real life) each piece of knowledge you have learned. Use the assessment criteria table to help you.
If you are fortunate enough to be in a French-speaking environment (at work, for example), prioritize what you can start using immediately. The goal is to practice in real-life situations.
_ Spend some time analyzing, point by point, the mock exams (videos) that you can find online. This will allow you to put yourself in the examiner’s shoes and think about how to showcase your French skills.
If you have level B1:
During your preparation, practice as much as possible with a French-speaking person and, towards the end of your preparation, do complete mock exams under exam conditions with a tutor who is very familiar with the tests.
Take advantage of every opportunity to practice (discussion groups, activities in French, etc.). Remember: be selective in your choices because your goal is B2/B2+! 😎
If you have level B2 and you want to put all the cards in your favor:
Be careful because, in order to pass your exam, you need to know the format of the tests and have a methodology, techniques, and strategies to apply during the exam.
Without this knowledge, even if you have a B2 level, you may fail. La première grande erreur, c’est de ne pas mettre en valeur son français
Also, do some full exam simulations and put yourself under a little stress to see how you react in exam conditions.
If you are studying on your own: B1 to B2 => INTENSIVE SIMULATIONS (Tutor, School)
You want to prepare for level B2 and then do intensive simulations with a tutor or in a school.
The idea behind the preparation proposed here is to help you master the concepts of the language and give you the tools and techniques you need to be effective in obtaining information or persuading others.
In addition, if you take the Tef-Tefaq, the exam format and tests are explained in detail.

J’ai réussi mon examen du premier coup; avec lui, on a vraiment bien travaillé sur l’examen oral, il m’a préparé à une multitude de sujets et m’a offert des perspectives differentes pour aborder les sujets sous un nouvel angle. Il partage généreusement ses notes et enregistrements audios, qui sont d’une aide précieuse pour réviser après les cours. Je recommande vivement Gilles à tous ceux qui passent le TEF.
